Paul was in the waiting room of the hospital. He felt refreshed, still homeless... But at least he was working for something, and they gave him whatever he needed. If you asked Paul about a year before what he thought about mobs, or 'mafia' he would have shrugged and said that they were evil. Being ignorant like most people in the world, this was what his view was before. It had been about two months since the encounters at the park. He was apart of the 'vongola'. And his- their park was being protected by the Vongola.
He stood up when the nurse came into the room and motioned for him. "She is asleep, but stable, she woke this morning and ate a bit." Paul smiled nodding. "Thanks," he responded, "at least she ate something, that is always good."
He followed her down the hallway, his hands in his hoodie pockets. He didn't feel that he needed to be led to the room, he remembered the direction easily. He is here often enough to even know the nurse's name, Judy. A very non Japanese name for a Japanese girl, but he didn't really mind, discrepancies like this are common, especially now.
Paul entered the room and waved as she left, he turned and saw his sister laying on the bed… She was horribly burned, her face and any part of her body that was revealed was horribly scared. Paul sighed, “hey sis.” He stated, not really expecting her to reply, he just sat down pulling his backpack out, pulling out Moby Dick. He started to read it aloud to her. She loved to read, and every chance he got he came here and read to her, if she was awake or not. He was so involved in the book that he didn’t notice someone enter the room behind him.

Though he may not look like it, Ryosuke in fact did a great deal of volunteer work. It wasn't as if he did for a particularly grand reason. It just seemed like a good way to spend time. It was both something that was attractive in a person of youth and also very rewarding for the soul. A particular spot in which he liked volunteering was the hospital in Kokuyo. It was rather far away from his own home, but the change of scenery was refreshing. He could almost parallel to a sort of fantasy when he was somewhere that was somewhat unfamiliar and new.
At the hospital, he did any sorts of odd jobs that were needed. He wheeled patients around, provided entertainment for the younger patients, and was simply a reassuring and bright presence within the hospital. He grew to be trusted and well-known as a sympathetic individual. This particular day, he was supervising Spade, the hospital's therapy dog. He was a beautiful golden retriever, friendly and quick to make friends.
Leash gripped firmly in his hand, Ryosuke reached the next room. He checked the name beside the door and saw 'Rebecca Desaun.' Judy, the nurse in charge of this particular patient and a good friend of his, had mentioned how this girl had unfortunately suffered rather severe burn injuries in an apartment fire. It was a rather sad story, to be so young yet have to suffer through this much.
He endeavored to be extra chipper today as he turned the doorknob. He was about to call out a greeting, but stopped himself in time to see that the room had another inhabitant. Ryosuke could make out a male figure, reading a book that he vaguely remembered as a classic, or something. He shut the door quietly behind him, guiding the gentle golden retriever inside. Spade panted slightly and padded towards the hospital bed as Ryosuke stepped towards them.
"Ah, hello, there. " He said softly, standing next to the boy. " I'm sorry if I'm interrupting you, it's just that my friend Spade here couldn't wait to meet Rebecca." He assumed this boy was perhaps her brother; they looked rather similar, and the nurses would never have let him enter if he was not related to her. Despite himself, Ryosuke vaguely wondered if he had been involved in the fire as well.[/blockquote]

Paul looked up from the book, blinking a bit. Well… He gets the award for most perceptive. Chuckling to himself he nodded to the other boy. “It’s all well, although she is sleeping… and I would rather you not wake her.” He replied cheerfully. Turning his attention to the dog he snapped his finger lightly trying to get its attention.
As the dog padded to him, he petted it lightly, “I’m Paul by the way, guess you are a nurse or something here?” He asked glancing up to the boy inquiringly. Waving to his sister he sighed, “she is asleep right now, I was just trying to give her good dreams of adventure.” He chuckled once again, apparently very cheerful, despite his sisters condition. He looked at the clock and the wall and noticed he had an hour still, making a face he leaned back in the chair. “So what brings you here to this slice of heaven?” He asked, and if it was supposed to be sarcastic, he didn’t give any hint at it. Paul continued scratching the dogs head, glad for the company, if his sister did indeed wake up, she would really like the furry beast keeping her company, and in that regard he was happy for this strangers presence.

Ryosuke glanced at Rebecca, noticing that she indeed was asleep. It was rather difficult to tell with patients in critical conditions like her. Some were simply resting, others in a deep sleep. Since the boy was reading to her, he had automatically assumed she was awake, but apparently not. The Rain Guardian nodded his head understandingly, his polite smile never wavering. He watched as Spade cozied up to to him, immediately taking a liking to him. He still held the leash, however, the Vongola ring on his finger glinting slightly as he gripped it. He wore it in plain view at the hospital. Anywhere else, it was slung on a necklace and tucked into his shirt. At this hospice, though, he felt more at ease. It was his place of work, his place of solace. At times, it felt as if nothing could touch him here, not even the Angelo.
"I'm Ryosuke, and nope, not quite a nurse. I don't look that old, do I? " He said and laughed. It was rather comical to imagine him as a nurse, or in any sort of occupation, really. It was still difficult for him to believe he was going to graduate soon. Where did his time go? It was rather odd how he was more concerned over that than he was of his newfound mafioso lifestyle" I just volunteer around the hospital. Today, I'm taking Spade around to our patients, see if he can brighten their day a little, yanno? How about you, Paul? This is your sister, yeah?" [/blockquote]

Paul looked up from the dog, answering a bit slowly after noticing the ring. “Yes she is my sister… Uhh… Hey, may we talk outside for a moment?” He asked, changing his tone quickly, something hesitant and a bit respectful. He patted the dog softly and then stood up, “please sir.” He said, even more respectfully.
Entering the hallway he turned his head and sighed loudly. “Please tell me you are just here like you said… I don’t want the family being around my sister…” He stated turning to Ryosuke a bit annoyed. “And if not, it’s good to meet you, I recently became a family member..” He stated, this was strange, he didn’t really expect to be here right now speaking to one of the top members of the family. It was so odd… And very… Weird. “I was from the park if you remember anything about that.” He stated. Paul leaned against the wall next to the door way, glancing down at the dog. In some strange way he was awed by the persons presence. In a strange way it was because of him that he was able to protect the park. And because of that, and all the opportunities that they have now, that he might be possible to give his sister expensive treatments.

Ryosuke nodded understandingly as he guess right; they were indeed related. He didn't miss the strange tone that Paul's voice took, though, as he continued on to ask him to step outside of the hospital room. The Rain Guardian glanced at the sleeping girl, an inquisitive and confused look on his face. He didn't like how serious the atmosphere had become, becoming tense from its once loose and fluid form. He wasn't accustomed to being addressed as a 'sir.' He was fairly certain that hospital volunteers weren't usually addressed as such.
Ryosuke hesitated, but followed Paul nonetheless, clicking his tongue to signal to Spade that he was to follow. The Rain Guardian could tell that something was weighing on the other boy's back, other than his sister's state, of course. He was slightly angered by the annoyed tone that he took with him, but he was more confused by anything. It took him a moment to realize what he was referring to. It wasn't just a 'family.' It was the Family. The Vongola Family. His visage plainly showed his recognition, eyes lighting up instantaneously. "Woah, dude, I totally didn't know that. " He said defensively, trying to be convincing. He hadn't heard of some park incident. Granted, he was a newbie in the mafia world, but he thought he might at least have heard of a new inductee in this area. Apparently not, he thought bluntly. " If you'd like me to leave, I can totally get another volunteer to accompany Spade" He gestured to the dog, indirectly introducing them. " with you and your sister. But, I really had no idea. Sorry." It couldn't be said that Ryosuke was genuinely sorry or regretful - though he showed very little sign of this - but it was more of a polite formality. He wasn't going to let himself be an inconvenience to a boy who had just suffered through so much.[/blockquote]
